Domain Names
I will assume that you are familiar with what a domain
name is and what it is used for. It is a reference to your location on the web. A fair amount of thought
needs to be put into choosing a domain name. It should be consistent with the theme and content of your
website. If your site is about dog training then dog training needs to be in your domain name. Search engines
use domain names as part of their ranking process. So if you’re site is about dog training you don’t want a
domain name of www.williesworld.com just because you think it’s cool that that name was
available. You can register that name if you want, just don’t use it for your dog training business.
Think about cool or clever domain names that fit. You can check on availability at www.godaddy.com . Make out a list
of the top 5 available and then work it down from there. Don’t jump into it because tomorrow you might think
of a better name that is available.
A word about registering a domain name, it will become like
your brand on the web. So make sure you keep the registration active. They are usually registered for a year
at a time but you can pay for 2 or 3 years and get a little discount. My advice to you is register your
domain name through Go Daddy rather than your web host. Some hosting companies offer a free domain name for
life with their hosting but if they go out of business next year you will find it impossible to regain
control of your domain name. Go Daddy is probably the largest and most reliable and should eliminate that
risk.
